Public Charge Rule The Trump administration’s Public Charge Rule would make it harder for immigrants to obtain legal status if they are receiving certain public benefits. People are foregoing much-needed benefits out of fear that they will jeopardize their status. There are legal challenges to the rule in progress. Action: 1. Leave a message stating your opposition to the Public Charge Rule at the DHS public comment line: (202) 282-8495 2. Consider donating to the National Immigration Law Center (four stars on Charity Navigator), which is suing the Trump administration over the Public Charge Rule: http://secure.nilc.org/np/clients/nilc/donation.jsp?forwardedFromSecureDomain=1&campaign=165 Statehood for D.C. Residents of Washington, DC pay federal taxes but have no members of Congress or senators to represent them. In 2016 86% of Washington, DC residents voted for statehood. It’s time to end taxation without representation for the District of Columbia. Action: Contact your Member of Congress and ask them to support H.R. 51 Washington, DC Admission Act. If your MoC is a Democrat they are already likely a cosponsor - if so, send them a message of thanks. Oppose Changes to SNAP Broad-based category eligibility (BBCE) is a rule which allows SNAP benefits to continue for individuals and families whose assets increase by a small amount; this stabilizes a family’s food supply throughout temporarily changing circumstances, as well as lowering administrative costs and reducing turnover. The Trump administration has proposed eliminating BBCE, which would lead to over 3 million people losing SNAP benefits. The economy would also suffer, as it is estimated that every SNAP dollar spent generates $1.22 to $1.89 of economic activity. Action: Contact your senators and your Member of Congress and ask them to oppose the Trump administration's proposed elimination of the SNAP program's broad-based categorical eligibility rule, as this rule change would increase hunger and harm the economy. The Ten-Minute Activist is taking a Summer Vacation until August 26! Trump Incites Israel Trump’s inflammatory words and the Israeli government's oppressive actions are antithetical to freedom, offensive to democracy, and insulting to the American people and their duly elected representatives. http://time.com/5653222/democratic-unity-israel-ban/ Action: Contact your senators and your Member of Congress and ask them to be outspoken in their criticism of both Trump and the Israeli government. Reject Asylum Changes In May, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced S.1494, the misnamed “Secure and Protect Act of 2019” which would change the current asylum process, making it harder to obtain asylum. The bill would require the asylum seeker to file in their own home country (clearly ludicrous), it would allow migrant children to be held for 100 days rather than the current 20, and would make it easier to deport unaccompanied minors. These changes are punitive and unjust. The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Action: Contact your senators and ask them to oppose this S. 1494. The changes do nothing to make the country safer and punish legitimate asylum seekers. If your senator is on the Judiciary Committee, ask them to never let it get out of committee. Gun Sense Trump has called a vocal Democratic gun control advocate in Congress (Rep. Chris Murphy of Connecticut) to talk about hashing out some kind of useful legislation. Trump has said he supports stronger background checks. Action: For once, call Trump to congratulate him on his common sense: www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ Gun Control Recess Rallies Gun sense activists are organizing rallies during the upcoming congressional recess. There seems to be more momentum than ever to pass meaningful gun safety legislation. Action: Look for a rally near you and make a plan to attend: http://act.everytown.org/event/august-recess-2019/?source=tmno_20190812-recess-rally-2019&refcode=tmno_20190812-recess-rally-2019&utm_source=tmno_20190812-recess-rally-2019&utm_medium=o&utm_campaign=20190812-recess-rally-2019. If you are unable to attend a rally, make a donation: http://donate.everytown.org/donate/support-everytown/ Plight of Migrant Children CPB has a horrible record of mistreatment and abuse of children in its custody. Action: Sign the ACLU petition calling on Congress to investigate CPB’s abuses. http://action.aclu.org/petition/congress-hold-cbp-accountable-inhumane-child-detention?ms=190628_immigrantrights_detention&initms=190628_immigrantrights_detention&ms_aff=nat&initms_aff=nat&ms_chan=web&initms_chan=web |
