Lights for Liberty There will be protests throughout the country on Friday evening, July 12, to protest the treatment of migrants and refugees. Action: Find a protest to attend, or organize one. Details here: www.lightsforliberty.org/ Migrant Child Internment The situation for interned migrant children is unconscionable and a disgrace to our country. From now on until further notice, we should contact our representatives every day until all the camps are closed and every single child is returned to his or her family. Action: Call yesterday, call today, call tomorrow: Find Your Representative | House.gov Contact Your Senator - Senate.gov Melt ICE More The bill we acted on yesterday has a version in the Senate which also would eliminate 287(g) agreements altogether. The bill is S. 1440 Protection Immigration Act. Action Contact your Senators and ask them to cosponsor and vote in favor of S. 1440 Protect Immigration Act. Or if your Senator is a cosponsor, thank them. Migrant Child Internment The situation for interned migrant children is unconscionable and a disgrace to our country. From now on until further notice, we should contact our representatives every day until all the camps are closed and every single child is returned to his or her family. Find Your Representative | House.gov Contact Your Senator - Senate.gov Melt ICE Eighty jurisdictions in 21 states have signed 287(g) deportation agreements that allow local police and sheriffs to target, abuse, and deport immigrants. These agreements allow local police to act, in effect, as agents of ICE and have resulted in approximately 12,000 deportations over the last two years. These agreements are about to expire on June 30, and Congress has introduced the Protect Immigration Act of 2019, which would eliminate them altogether. Action 1. Contact your Member of Congress and ask them to vote in favor of H.R. 2729, the Protect Immigration Act of 2019. Or, if your MoC is a cosponsor, thank them. 2. If your area has a jurisdiction with a 287(g) agreement, contact them to state your opposition and ask that the agreement not be renewed after June 30. An interactive map of all such jurisdictions may be found here: www.ilrc.org/national-map-287g-agreements Defund ICE It is clear that ICE and CBP have caused huge suffering to migrants and their children. ICE and CBP are not trained, nor is their mission, to treat human beings with compassion and dignity, and if their actions are allowed to continue unfettered, an even worse humanitarian crisis will ensue. ICE and CBP are cold-blooded enforcement machines whose only purpose is to further the political interests of their equally cold-blooded master. Action 1. If your MoC sits on the House Appropriations Committee, contact them and ask them specifically to: a) reduce funding for ICE and CBP to Fiscal Year 2016 levels; and b) eliminate Trump’s $387 million slush fund, as he plans to use it for his “Enforcement and Removals Operation.” 2. If your MoC is not on the House Appropriations Committee, ask them to refuse to vote for any bill which increases funding for ICE and CBP. ICE Trump has postponed the ICE raids he had originally planned to start on Sunday. However, he has not called them off completely. Action Please post this information from ACLU Texas on social media. It describes your rights during an immigration raid and how to respond to ICE officers. www.aclutx.org/en/know-your-rights/how-protect-yourself-during-immigration-raid Lower the Cost of Meds H.R.1046 - Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act of 2019 - would authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, and if those companies refused to bring down their prices, to authorize competitor companies to produce a generic version of the drug. Action Contact your Member of Congress; if they are among the cosponsors, thank them and say that you are looking forward to passage of the bill. If they are not, ask them to become a cosponsor and to support the bill. |
