Reject Asylum Changes In May, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced S.1494, the misnamed “Secure and Protect Act of 2019” which would change the current asylum process, making it harder to obtain asylum. The bill would require the asylum seeker to file in their own home country (clearly ludicrous), it would allow migrant children to be held for 100 days rather than the current 20, and would make it easier to deport unaccompanied minors. These changes are punitive and unjust. The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Action: Contact your senators and ask them to oppose this S. 1494. The changes do nothing to make the country safer and punish legitimate asylum seekers. If your senator is on the Judiciary Committee, ask them to never let it get out of committee.
