This Saturday is supposed to be catch-up day, but then Trump did this: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/08/trumps-el-paso-photo-is-obscene/595888/ Action: Contact the White House and tell them what you think: www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ Also ICE has been active in Mississippi, rounding up parents whose children were away at the first day of school. They made no attempt to warn the schools or social services. Mississippi immigrants need our help. Consider donating to MIssissippi Immigrants Rights Alliance: https://yourmira.wpcomstaging.com/httpswww-paypal-comdonatetokennrjjkkjxk4gnw83npbxhwjd9lfrre019noqcqp8li06f4gvuaybphgjqtfe-nizuev1ohwcountry-xuslocale-x/ Mustangs The Bureau of Land Management is considering surgically spaying mustang mares as a way to control the mustang population. A number of senators have asked David Bernhardt, Secretary of the Interior, to abandon this plan. Surgically spaying mares, especially wild ones, would be extremely dangerous to their health and would, moreover, disrupt their social life. It is true that mustang populations need to be controlled; however, it is a better option to use reversible, chemical fertility control, which is the method used with the Assateague herd. Action: Call the Department of the Interior and leave a message for Secretary Bernhardt: (202) 208-3100, option 3. Baltimore Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD-7), whose district was insulted by Trump, has called on the President to come and visit Baltimore and drive around with him to see all the fine things that the city has to offer. Trump has not responded. Action: Contact the White House and tell Trump to accept Rep. Cummings’ invitation. Gun Legislation Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH-10), who has consistently opposed gun safety legislation and has an A rating from the NRA, has done a 180 since the shooting in his home state. He has said that he will now back a ban on military style weapons in his state and would support expanded background checks and the introduction of “red flag” laws to prevent guns getting into the wrong hands. (His daughter was across the street from the shooting while it was happening.) Action: 1. Send a fax to Rep. Turner to thank him for his stance: http://faxzero.com/fax_congress/T000463 2. If your Member of Congress is Republican, contact them and ask them to join their colleague Mike Turner in calling for meaningful gun control legislation. Guns Another mass shooting incident - this time in El Paso, TX - is causing some slight movement on the Hill in the direction of possibly maybe some kind of conversation about potential legislation to maybe possibly prevent guns getting into the hands of literally anyone. Action: 1. Contact your Senators and demand meaningful gun control legislation. 2. Contact your Member of Congress and demand meaningful gun control legislation. Protecting Elections Mitch McConnell (aka Moscow Mitch) is stonewalling attempts to introduce legislation which would protect future elections against Russian interference. Now that the Mueller Report is readily available (Amazon, $7.20), it is easy for all to read about the shocking extent to which Russia coopted our electoral process and influenced the outcome of the 2016 election. McConnell has blocked every attempt to introduce meaningful legislation and seems to have no interest in finding a way to safeguard our electoral integrity. He has refused to bring any such legislation to the floor of the Senate. Action: 1. Contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor and support S. 2053 SAFE (Safeguarding America’s Federal Elections) Act, as well as S. 1247 Duty to Report Act, which would require candidates, campaign officials and their family members to notify the FBI and the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours if they receive or are offered foreign contributions. 2. Fax Mitch McConnell and ask him to bring an election safety bill to the floor of the Senate for a vote, preferably S. 2053 and S. 1247. Marijuana NORML (the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) has a webpage showing pending legislation in all the different states. Action: Check out the NORML page: http://norml.org/act Find your state on the map and click on it. You’ll see a list of pending bills. Pick one or more, and click “email your lawmakers.” You’ll then be able to input your address and send a message to your state rep and state senator. |
