Horses Again

Yesterday we were thankful that the House passed H.R. 693 the PAST Act. Now we need the Senate to pass their version of the PAST Act: S. 1007

Action:

Contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor and support S. 1007, Prevent All Soring Tactics Act. If your Senator is already a co-sponsor, send them a message of thanks.

More Thanks

The practice of “soring” horses and adding harmful devices to a horse’s feet (especially Tennessee Walking Horses) to obtain more extravagant gaits in was outlawed in 1970. However, policing of the legislation was inadequate, and the practice continued. A new bill, H.R. 693, Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, an amendment to the 1970 Horse Protection Act, has passed the House. This bill increases penalties for violations of the Act and improves enforcement by establishing a new USDA system for inspection of horses. All Democrats and a majority of Republicans voted in favor of the PAST Act. Hard to imagine why anyone voted against it.

Action:

Contact your Member of Congress. If they voted in favor of H.R. 693 the PAST Act, thank them. If they opposed the bill, complain.

Trump Being Rude

Trump was very rude and disrespectful about Baltimore, calling it “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

Action:

Every now and then, even though he doesn’t listen, we should remind Trump that he’s being an idiot.

Contact the White House to take him to task for his intemperate comments about Baltimore.

Marijuana

There are bills in the House and Senate which would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, allow the marijuana industry full access to financial services, provide access to medical marijuana for veterans, and expunge certain existing cannabis offences.

Weaponized Ticks, Part 2

The House version of the 2020 Defense Authorization Bill contains an amendment, introduced by Reps. Collin C. Peterson (D-MN) and Andy Harris (R-MD) which would require the Pentagon to reveal to Congress whether or not the U.S. military experimented with disease-carrying insects and whether such insects were released out into the public. The Senate version does not contain this amendment, and the House and Senate have yet to reconcile the two versions.. On July 18, we contacted our Members of Congress to ask them to make sure the amendment is in the final version of the bill.

Action:

Contact your Senators and ask them to make sure the Peterson/Harris amendment is contained within the final version of the 2020 Defense Authorization Bill.
