Wild Horse Habitat Protection This is a good-news action. Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia overturned a U.S. Forest Service attempt to reduce the Devil’s Garden wild horse territory in California by 23,000 acres. Action: 1. Contact the U.S. Forest Service to say you are happy with the U.S. Court of Appeals decision and that wild horse territories should be protected and enlarged. 2. A huge amount of valuable work in this country is performed by pro bono attorneys, who represent individuals and organizations whose cause is just but who lack funds to pay for legal representation. The American Wild Horse Campaign was represented in this case by William S. Eubanks II of Meyer, Glitzenstein & Eubanks. Let’s take a moment to recognize the value of this kind of public-spirited and generous work - contact William Eubanks to thank him for his work in the Devil’s Garden wild horse case. If you
North Korea (again) The lunacy continues. Trump’s religious advisor has told him it’s just dandy if he wants to bomb the heck out of other countries. There is a Christian just war doctrine, but prophylactically nuking North Korea comes nowhere near fulfilling the conditions of just war. (If such a thing as fulfilling the conditions of a just war can even be possible.) Action: 1. Pick either of your senators or your MoC and give them another call to demand that they do something - anything - to rein in the White House Madman. 2. Write to Robert Jeffress, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Dallas, 1707 San Jacinto Street, Dallas, TX 75201. Tell him to stop feeding the president such dangerous, false, and unchristian rubbish. Or words to that effect. If you prefer to email, here's the direct contact form for First Baptist: http://www.firstdallas.org/contact-us North Korea Trump has gone off his rocker with his latest statements about North Korea: “... North Korea would “face fire and fury like the world has never seen” if Pyongyang keeps threatening the United States.” Whether or not this is hyperbole, it’s dangerous and crazy talk. Action: 1. Contact Rex Tillerson and ask him to de-escalate the rhetoric. 2. Call your MoC and ask them to censure the President’s imprudence. Resistance Recess Congressional recess is July 28 to September 5 - time for our reps to come home and face the music. Action: 1. Look up a “Resistance Recess” event near you - go to this MoveOn.org page, put in your zip code, and see if there’s a local event. If you can attend, that’s your action for the week! Whether or not you are able to attend, publicize the event on social media. OR 2. Call one of your senators or your MoC and ask for a meeting during recess. Have in mind a topic you’d like to discuss. There’s only the slimmest chance you’ll get a meeting, but it’ll put them on notice. OR 3. Call one of your senators or your MoC and ask if there’s a town hall or public meeting during recess. If the answer is no, ask why not. If the answer is yes, find out details and publicize on social media. The deputies have been put on paid leave, but we should send a strong message that such behavior is utterly unacceptable. Action: Send a postcard to Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department, or call them, to say that you condemn the behavior of the deputies and their brutal mistreatment of Jordan Norris. He has written a book, Conscience of a Conservative, which was recently exerpted in Politico. His words have drawn the ire of many in his party, especially the President and his minions. Action: Let’s take a few minutes today to thank Senator Flake for having the courage to take an unpopular stance in his party for what he believes is in the best interests of the American people. Send him an email, give him a call at 202-224-4521, send him a fax, or write to him at Senate Russell Office Building 413, Washington, D.C. 20510. Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2017 11.4 million Americans pay 50% or more of their income on housing, and there is a growing scarcity of affordable housing. This bill seeks to modify the existing affordable housing credit to incentivize the creation and availability of more affordable housing. The bill is introduced by a Democrat, with 10 Democratic co-sponsors, eight Republican, and one Independent. It’s nice to see bipartisan legislation in a good cause. Action: If your senator is one of the co-sponsors, write and thank them for their support of S.548 The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2017. If your senator is not one of the co-sponsors, write and ask them to jump on board and become a co-sponsor of S.548 The Affordable Credit Improvement Act of 2017. Trump Plans to Cut Immigration Trump is supporting a bill which would cut legal immigration in half within the next ten years. The reduction in numbers would be achieved by drastically curtailing the ability of existing immigrants to bring family members into the country. The bill, S. 354, the RAISE (Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment) Act, was introduced by Senators Tom Cotton (R-AK) and David Perdue (R-GA). It’s a piece of political grandstanding, designed to divert attention from the rich-getting-richer by blaming immigrants for lack of employment, which is simply false. Senator Lindsey Graham has said that the bill would devastate the economy of agricultural areas, which depend largely on immigrant labor, as well as the hospitality industry. And of course it would divide families. Action: 1. Contact your senators and ask them to oppose S. 354. 2. Contact Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue to tell them you don’t like their bill. Also tell them it has a really stupid name. 3. Contact the White House to say you don’t want to curtail immigration. 4. Contact Lindsey Graham and thank him for speaking out against S. 354. |
