Abuse of Detained Migrants Migrants, both adults and children, are subject to privation and abuse when detained by ICE and CBP. Huge numbers of people are now held in custody, and there are reports of vital medications being confiscated and not returned, unsanitary conditions, overcrowding, denial of necessary medical care, etc. The Trumpian agenda of rounding up and detaining immigrants and asylum seekers is solely punitive in nature. No reasonable or prudential policy is being furthered by these draconian measures, and nothing can justify the inhumane treatment of these vulnerable people. Action: Contact your Member of Congress and Senators to express your outrage at the treatment of detained migrants and migrant children, insist on a full investigation into the conditions under which they are currently being held, and demand an end to the mass detention of all undocumented migrants. ICE Detention Centers It’s time to act again on the state level regarding ICE detention centers. The state of Illinois has banned private migrant detention centers. Other states should do the same. Action: 1. If you live in Illinois, contact your governor with a message of appreciation for the state’s decision. 2. If you live in a different state, contact your governor to ask that your state follow Illinois’ example in banning private immigration detention facilities, and ask your governor to provide you with the answers to one or more of the following questions (taken from 5Calls.org):
www.usa.gov/state-governor ICE Fining Immigrants Trump’s cruel campaign of retaliation against asylum seekers and migrants continues with ICE issuing exorbitant fines to immigrants who have been told to leave but still remain in this country. There is a fear that ICE will also start issuing fines to groups who are providing sanctuary to migrants. Action: 1. Contact your Member of Congress and let them know that ICE’s tactics are unacceptable. 2. Consider donating directly to El Calvario Methodist Church in Las Cruces, NM, which is offering asylum and assistance to migrant families fleeing dangerous conditions in their home countries, by buying them items from their Amazon Wish List: www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/1UT085XJNUJLA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_ws_4sSGCb79AKJ6C?fbclid=IwAR3D3k5ehLb-XJhH44-wRgqGjkPqvAGon-p5QEJ-sEDyKQd86qJRjUYDv8Q Voting Rights In March, the House passed H.R. 1, for the People Act of 2019, which addresses voter rights, redistricting, ethics, political spending, and election security. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that Federal Courts can’t get involved in the prevention of partisan gerrymandering, it’s vital that this legislation is passed by the Senate and becomes law. However, Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. Action: 1. Contact your Senators and ask them to urge McConnell to bring H.R. 1 to the Senate floor for a vote and ask them to give the bill their full support. 2. Contact Mitch McConnell and ask him to bring H.R. 1 to the floor for a full vote. Detention Centers John Cornyn recently tweeted that he might have to take his bank account away from Bank of America, as they refuse to do business with companies which operate migrant detention centers. Action: 1. Email Bank of America Vice Chairman, Thong M. Nguyen, to thank him for Bank of America’s principled stance: Thong.Nguyen@bankofamerica.com 2. Contact your own bank and ask them to drop any clients which operate detention centers. You can find some useful contact information at this site: www.elliott.org/company-contacts/. But if you log in to your online banking, there should be a contact form which will allow you to send a message. 3. And keep calling/emailing/faxing your representatives to protest the existence of migrant detention camps, especially those with children: Find Your Representative | House.gov Contact Your Senator - Senate.gov Faxzero.com/ |
