End Forced Arbitration Many employment agreements and commercial contracts force employees and consumers to agree to submit disputes and grievances to arbitration presided over by a “judge” hired by the employer or corporation. Members of the House and Senate have introduced legislation which would protect workers and prevent employers from forcing employees to submit to arbitration. The legislation also safeguards the rights of employees to participate in collective action, as well as protecting the rights of consumers to seek redress through the courts. Action: 1. Contact your Member of Congress and ask them to support H.R. 1423 Forced Arbitration Injustice Repeal Act. If they are already a cosponsor, thank them. 2. Contact your Senators and ask them to support S. 610 Forced Arbitration Injustice Repeal Act. If they are already a cosponsor, thank them. 3. If you want to save time, the National Consumer Law Center will deliver a message to all your reps on your behalf from this page.

Protect Dreamers Trump has tried to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and to revoke hundreds of thousands of immigrants’ Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Court injunctions have allowed the DACA and TPS protections to continue, but given the current membership of the Supreme Court, these programs are in jeopardy. House Democrats have introduced legislation to protect Dreamers and TPS recipients and to provide a pathway to citizenship for them. The bill is H.R. 6, American Dream and Promise Act of 2019. S. 874, the Dream Act of 2019, is a bipartisan Senate bill which offers some of the same protections. Action: 1. Contact your Member of Congress. If they are already a cosponsor, thank them. If not, ask them to get on board and support H.R. 6, American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 2. Contact your Senators. If they are already cosponsors of the bill, thank them. If not, ask them to support S. 874, the Dream Act of 2019. Antibiotic Resistance The indiscriminate use of antibiotics in farm animals is contributing to the world-wide crisis of antibiotic resistance, which causes an increasingly large number of human deaths every year. There was a bill introduced in the Senate in the 115th Congress, S. 629 Preventing Antibiotic Resistance Act of 2017, which sought to enforce stricter controls over the use of antibiotics in agricultural livestock. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them what has become of this legislation in the 116th Congress. If your Senator was one of the original cosponsors, thank them and ask them to follow up. |
