Oppose William Otis William G. Otis, a former Virginia federal prosecutor, is one of Trump’s picks to sit on the U.S. Federal Sentencing Commission, an independent body which sets sentencing policy for federal crimes. Otis is in favor of minimum mandatory sentences for non-violent drug offenses and does not believe that there is any racial bias in criminal justice. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them to OPPOSE the nomination of William G. Otis to the U.S. Federal Sentencing Commission.

U.S.A. Resorts to Blackmail The World Health Assembly was voting on a no-brainer resolution to protect, support, and promote breastfeeding and to restrict the promotion of alternative infant food products. It has been estimated that if breastfeeding were the universal method of feeding infants under six months of age (as opposed to the current proportion of 30%), approximately 800,000 infant lives worldwide would be saved every year. The resolution was introduced by Ecuador, and the U.S.A. muscled in and said they’d introduce trade sanctions and withhold military support in retaliation. Ecuador was bullied and intimidated into submission; however Russia stepped up and saved the day by introducing the resolution, which was passed despite attempts by the U.S. delegation to prevent its adoption. Action 1. Contact the State Department to protest. 2. Call the Department of Health and Human Services to protest: (202) 205-5445. 3. Contact your Senators and Member of Congress to protest. Don’t forget you can also send up to five free faxes per day to your reps at www.faxzero.com. 4. Contact the White House to protest. Denial of Asylum The Trump administration has instructed ICE agents that parents seeking reunification with their children must sign a form as a condition of reunification. The form gives only two options: leave the U.S.A. with your children; or leave without them. Even if your asylum claim is already in process, you are required to sign the form. Action - as many as you can: 1. Email a complaint to the United Nations Council on Human Rights, protesting the refusal to allow the adult family members of separated children to petition for asylum: http://mail.google.com/mail/ca/u/0/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&source=mailto&to=CP@ohchr.org 2. Call your Senators and your Member of Congress to protest this violation of human rights. 3. Contact Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Ranking Member Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), asking them to intercede to prevent this gross violation of human rights. 4. Donate to the ACLU and/or the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Lest We Forget The more than 2,000 migrant children who have been separated from their parents do not have legal representation unless a pro bono attorney steps up and takes their case. There is no court-appointed legal counsel for these children. Action: Contact your Member of Congress and ask that they introduce legislation to mandate court-appointed legal representation for unaccompanied migrant children. It is unconscionable that young children should be pushed through immigration hearings with no one to represent them. Senate Intelligence Committee Blames Russia The Senate Intelligence Committee has affirmed the findings of the intelligence community that Russia did indeed interfere with the 2016 elections and that their purpose in so doing was to help Trump win. Both Republicans and Democrats on the committee were in agreement. Action: 1. Contact the Senate Intelligence Committee by phone or mail to thank them for their independence and respect for the truth. 2. If one of your Senators is on the Committee, send them a personal message of thanks. 3. Not that it will do the slightest bit of good, write, call, or email the White House to strongly censure Trump’s obduracy and mendacity in the matter of Russian interference in our electoral process: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC, 20500 (202) 456-1111 Contact form: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/#page Supreme Court Vacancy Effective July 31, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy will be retiring. He has been a swing vote on the court, aligning himself sometimes with the more liberal justices and sometimes with the more conservative. Action: Call your Senators and ask them to oppose any ideological extremist nominated to the Supreme Court. The best candidate would continue Kennedy’s non-ideological stance and should receive broad bi-partisan support. No divisive nominee should be considered. If your Senator is a Democrat, stress that they should NOT BE A WIMP and should do everything in their power to block the nomination of an ideologue. Families Belong Together On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people joined more than 700 rallies across the country to protest Trump’s draconian measures against migrant families at the border. Action: Keep the momentum going - visit the Families Belong Together site: sign the petition; sign up to keep informed; donate; buy t-shirts/buttons/stickers. http://www.familiesbelongtogether.org/ |
