U.S.A. Resorts to Blackmail The World Health Assembly was voting on a no-brainer resolution to protect, support, and promote breastfeeding and to restrict the promotion of alternative infant food products. It has been estimated that if breastfeeding were the universal method of feeding infants under six months of age (as opposed to the current proportion of 30%), approximately 800,000 infant lives worldwide would be saved every year. The resolution was introduced by Ecuador, and the U.S.A. muscled in and said they’d introduce trade sanctions and withhold military support in retaliation. Ecuador was bullied and intimidated into submission; however Russia stepped up and saved the day by introducing the resolution, which was passed despite attempts by the U.S. delegation to prevent its adoption.
