Still Kavanaugh We are very tired of hearing this controversy being couched as a Democratic plot to foil the nomination. Sure, the Dems are going to make the most of it; but the Republican attitude that this is ALL it’s about is pretty sickening. Not everyone who opposes Kavanaugh is a Democrat, and partisan politics played no part in Ford’s motivation in coming forward. Here’s another thing we’re sick of hearing: “Innocent Until Proven Guilty.” In a criminal case (where this standard applies), a charge is made, a police investigation searches for evidence and witnesses, and the prosecutors are allowed their day (or days or weeks) in court to make their case. If they fail to establish guilt beyond all reasonable doubt, then the defendant is innocent. So if we’re going to use the I-U-P-G standard, there should be a full police investigation and a fullsome expose of the results. A presumption of innocence in a court of law goes hand in hand with a serious attempt to establish guilt. Most of the GOP want to stymie such an attempt, and therefore Kavanaugh’s innocence cannot be determined. Action: Write to your local paper to talk about how this issue goes way beyond party politics. (Or talk about anything you want!) If you are not a Democrat, be sure to mention it.
