The Vultures are Circling

The House is looking to make drastic cuts in spending in order to finance Trump’s plans to build the infamous Wall and enact tax cuts, while at the same time complying with his wish to leave Medicare and Social Security alone. House members are scrambling to find other places to make cuts, and the programs which are in for the axe are likely to be those which help the most vulnerable, such as food stamps, welfare, income assistance for the disabled and perhaps even veterans benefits.

The House is going to be busy with this in the coming days and weeks. Now is  the time to let our Representatives know that we can do without tax cuts for the rich, but we canNOT do without programs to help the vulnerable. SOME of these programs, however, would not be necessary if the House were to enact a living minimum wage law.

Action:

  1. Write a postcard to your Member of Congress asking them to preserve in its entirety the safety net which is in place to protect the poor and vulnerable. Ask them to ditch tax cuts for the wealthy instead. Say you’ll be WATCHING them.
  2. Call your Member of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 122, The Original Living Wage Act of 2017, which sets the minimum wage as the amount needed for an individual working full-time to earn 15% above the federal poverty threshold for a family of four with two minor children.
