End Government Shutdowns
Even Republicans believe that government shutdowns should not be a hostage in budget negotiations. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said, “[G]overnment shutdowns should be in budget negotiations what chemical weapons are to real warfare…. completely off limits.” There is a GOP-sponsored bill in the Senate to prevent future shutdowns: the End Government Shutdowns Act, S. 104. In the House, there is a bipartisan bill which would withhold pay from the president and lawmakers in any future shutdown - the Solidarity in Salary Act of 2019, introduced by Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), and Max Rose (D-NY).
1. Contact your Senators and ask them to support S. 104, the End Government Shutdowns Act. If they are already a cosponsor, thank them. (Yes, even if they are Ted Cruz.)
2. Contact your MoC and ask them to support the Solidarity in Salary Act of 2019. If Rep. Golden, Crenshaw, or Rose is yours, tell them thank you. (There’s no info up on Congress.gov yet about this bill.)
