National Popular Vote The National Popular Vote is a movement to change the way presidential votes are counted. NPV bypasses the arduous and difficult process of changing the Constitution to replace the Electoral College. Each state independently passes NPV legislation, which provides that the state’s Electoral College votes will automatically go to the presidential candidate with the most popular votes. But each state’s NPV bill provides that it will not take effect until NPV bills have been passed in enough states such that their total Electoral College votes total 260 - the magic number needed to elect the President. Only 74 more EC votes are needed. Action: 1. Read this article about the flawed Electoral College system: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2019/09/07/the-electoral-college-is-not-what-its-defenders-say-it-is/ 2. Check out the NPV site and see what your own state’s status is. If your state hasn’t yet enacted an NPV bill, contact your state legislators (links on page): https://www.nationalpopularvote.com Consumer Protections The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has proposed a new debt collection rule which does more to protect the interests of creditors and debt collection agencies than the interests of consumers. However, he says he will bring legislation to the floor when there is a bill that Trump says he will support. Action: 1. Contact Mitch McConnell and ask him to bring red flag legislation to the floor of the Senate for a vote. 2. Contact the White House and ask Trump to give the green light to some serious gun safety legislation. 3. Contact your own Senators and ask them to call loudly for red flag legislation, and other gun control bills, to be brought to the Senate for a vote. Stupid Wall Trump is planning to divert $3.6 billion from important military construction projects to fund his useless border wall. This usurps the congressional power of the purse and is a slap in the face of the armed forces, which Trump et al claim they support. Action: 1. Contact the White House to object to this plan. 2. Contact your Member of Congress to object to this plan. We the People March The “We the People March” will be taking place in Washington, DC and other locations on September 21. Their mission statement is: We the People are marching to be seen and heard. We are marching to remind our elected officials that they work for us. We are marching because the current regime is a threat to our democracy and values. We are marching to demand action. Silence and inaction are complicity. Action: If you are able to attend the march, mark your calendar! The march is DC, and the organizers are offering transportation arrangements to help people get to the capital on the day. There are also solidarity marches in a number of other cities: http://wethepeoplemarch.org/solidarity-marches/ Keep checking the site, as other cities may be added closer to the time. |
