U.S. Maternal Mortality Rate The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate in the developed world. In order to try to understand, analyse, and remedy this unfortunate state of affairs, Rep. Jaime Herrera Butler (R-WA-3) introduced the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act of 2017, H.R. 1318. This act would direct HHS to make grants to states for the purposes of reviewing and reporting on all maternal deaths, making this information publicly available, and identifying solutions. The bill also directs HHS to eliminate disparities in maternal health outcomes. This is a bipartisan bill, cosponsored by 185 representatives, and is scheduled for a vote this week. Action: Contact your Member of Congress to say that you hope they will vote for H.R. 1318 and that you look forward to seeing it enacted. If your MoC is a cosponsor, thank them.

Ryan Zinke Must Go Ryan Zinke, Secretary of the Interior, far from being a guardian of the nation’s natural and historic treasures, has used his position to broker private real estate deals, buried evidence of the importance of national monuments to tourism, suppressed climate change data and silenced DoI scientists who disagree with him, and spent inordinate amounts of public funds on his own lifestyle as Secretary. Action: 1. Contact your Member of Congress and ask them to demand the resignation of Ryan Zinke as Secretary of the Interior; he has no respect for the mission of the agency, has been involved in ethical violations, and suppresses the truth when it doesn’t agree with his agenda. 2. Send a message directly to the Department of the Interior, asking for Zinke’s resignation: feedback@ios.doi.gov Apologies for lack of post today, due to Internet malfunction! Yemen On Wednesday, the Senate voted to advance a resolution to end U.S. military support for the Saudi war against Yemen. This marks the first time in history that the Senate has advanced a bill to withdraw forces from an unauthorized war using the War Powers Resolution Act. The current resolution - S.J.Res. 54 - was introduced into the Senate in February by Senator Bernie Sanders, but has won support recently because of the Saudi murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The resolution is expected to come to a vote this week. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them to vote in favor of S.J. Res. 54, A joint resolution to direct the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress. Russian Aggression On November 25, Russia seized 3 Ukrainian ships along with 24 sailors, whom they are now holding in custody. This unprovoked act of aggression has been condemned by NATO, all members of the G7 states, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. But conspicuously NOT by Trump, who wants to wait to discuss the matter with his pal Putin at the upcoming G20 summit. Congress should act without the President and send a strong message that unprovoked aggression by one state against another will not be tolerated. One way to do this is via the DASKA (Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression) Act, a bipartisan bill which reaffirms support for NATO and mandates the imposition of more effective sanctions against the Russian Federation. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them urgently to support S.3336 the Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act. Obamacare Open enrollment for health care coverage through the ACA ends on December 15. Trump & minions would like to see the ACA fail and, as well as having cut the open enrollment period in half, they are putting no effort or funding into outreach or advertising. Action: Combat the administration’s silence by sharing information about open enrollment on social media.
