Muslim Ban The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump Muslim ban to stand pending legal challenges in various parts of the country. Meanwhile, there are bills before the House and Senate to block implementation of the ban. The House bill, H.R. 4271, was introduced by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA-27), and has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, and the House Intelligence Committee. The Senate bill, S. 1979, was introduced by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Action: 1. If your MoC is a co-sponsor of the bill, thank them. 2. If your MoC is not a co-sponsor, ask them to become one, and if they are on one of the committees (links above) to which the bill has been referred, contact them and ask them to work to vote the bill forward to a full vote in the House. 3. If either of your Senators is a co-sponsor of the Senate bill, thank them. 4. If your Senator is not a co-sponsor, ask them to become one, and if they sit on the Judiciary Committee (link above), ask them to vote the bill forward for a full vote in the Senate. Net Neutrality The FCC is about to vote to repeal net neutrality at their next monthly meeting. Here is a list of how much the big ISPs donated to your representatives: www.theverge.com/2017/12/11/16746230/net-neutrality-fcc-isp-congress-campaign-contribution Internet experts are calling upon Congress and the Senate to block the FCC vote to repeal net neutrality. Action: If your Member of Congress or Senator is a Republican (i.e. a supporter of repealing net neutrality), look up their campaign donations received from the big ISPs and call to complain about their lack of impartiality. Ask them to block the FCC vote. If your Member of Congress or Senator is a Democrat (i.e. a supporter of net neutrality), ask them to block the FCC vote. Senate contact info: www.senate.gov House contact info: www.house.gov Moral Turpitude Senator Al Franken (D-MN) and Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) have both resigned for behavior which, while reprehensible, is small potatoes compared to the self-confessed actions of our chief executive. Three Senators have called for the President to resign. Action: 1. Call your Member of Congress. Ask them to call for the President’s resignation. If your MoC is a Republican, first ask if they have a position on Franken’s resignation. If they support it, then challenge them to be consistent and call for the President’s resignation. 2. Contact the White House, demanding that the President resign. Roy Moore Roy Moore is a disgrace to his party and a disgrace to the nation and a disgrace to the president who has endorsed his candidacy. Action: 1. Contact the Republican National Committee to express your disgust that the GOP would have such a candidate in its ranks. ecampaign@gop.com 2. Contact the Alabama Republican Party to censure their gruesome choice of candidate. https://algop.org/contact/ DACA/DREAM Senate Republicans and Democrats are skirmishing over how to pass an extension of DACA. Republicans want to pass a version which (among other things) targets sanctuary cities, limits immigration of family members, funds an extensive build-up of force along the Mexican border, and does not include a path to citizenship. The Democrats want to pass a DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act which does include a path to citizenship, but also contains some concessions to the GOP border security concerns. Senators Flake and Durbin are trying to come up with a bipartisan bill. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them pass a clean DREAM Act which includes a path to citizenship. At Least Some People Are Coming to Their Senses http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/363834-poll-trumps-approval-rating-hits-new-low-in-pew-poll More Gun Madness Well, the House has gone and done it: they passed the Trojan Horse Fix NICS Bill with the concealed carry reciprocity poison pill. All is not yet lost, however, as it now has to be passed by the Senate, who are hopefully not as wrong in the head. Senator Cornyn, who introduced Fix NICS, is saying he believes that Fix NICS should be separated out from the concealed carry legislation and passed on its own. Action: Call your Senators again and ask them to pass a CLEAN Fix NICS Act without the attached concealed carry reciprocity poison pill. Tax Bill As you know, the Senate passed the infamous tax bill in the middle of the night on Saturday. Some of the bad things about this legislation:
The House and Senate now have to hash out the differences between their two bills and come to an agreement of what to pass into law. Action: Call your Member of Congress to strongly protest the Tax Bill. Call your MoC directly or go through the Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. URGENT - Gun Insanity On November 18, we wrote to our Senators asking them to support the Fix NICS Act (S. 2135), a modest bipartisan bill to tighten up background checks for gun purchases nationally. A similar bill (H.R. 4477) was introduced into the House. This seemingly pleasant, reasonable, bipartisan, uncontroversial bill has turned into a Trojan Horse. House Republicans have inserted a poison pill onto the Act: they have attached H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. What is wrong with concealed carry reciprocity legislation? After all, we have reciprocity with driver’s licenses. It is not a parallel situation, however, as there are multiple states which allow individuals to purchase a gun with no background check and to carry concealed weapons without having demonstrated any skill or training. Concealed carry reciprocity would be akin to welcoming drivers from states which give driver’s licenses to untested individuals who have multiple DUI’s, uncorrected vision, and a demonstrable predilection for vehicular homicide. There’s no point in enumerating just how devious and devilish this all this - it’s all glaringly obvious. Action: 1. Call your Member of Congress and say NO poison pill in Fix NICS - pass it WITHOUT concealed carry reciprocity or don’t pass it at all. 2. Call your Senators to say the same thing. Jerusalem Trump is threatening to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move which would alienate and antagonize other states in the region. Action: Contact the State Department and ask them to not make this move. https://register.state.gov/contactus/contactusform |
