Trump’s Veto Both the House and Senate passed legislation to block Trump’s “national emergency.” Of course, Trump has vetoed it. Action: Contact and/or tweet at the White House to lambast the presidential veto: www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ twitter.com/realDonaldTrump

Action: Contact Governor Newsom to thank him for his action. http://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/ Yemen In December, the Senate passed a joint resolution invoking the War Powers Act and directing the president to remove U.S. armed forces from the conflict in Yemen. The then Republican-controlled House didn’t take it up, but now that it is likely to pass the House, the resolution has been re-introduced into the Senate by Bernie Sanders and cosponsored by 17 Democrats and one Republican. As the previous Senate passed the similar resolution, there’s a chance the new one will also pass, opening the way to a veto fight. The bill is currently tabled (over an amendment?), but there seem to be enough Republicans voting with the Democrats to pass it eventually. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them to support S.J. Res. 7, “A joint resolution to direct the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress.” R & R Are you feeling jaded, disappointed, and disgusted over the college entrance scandals that erupted yesterday? Action: Cheer yourself up a little: www.goodnewsnetwork.org/category/news/ Trump’s Insane Budget Trump has come up with a record-high, ludicrous budget, increasing military spending beyond what the Pentagon asked for, allocating $8.6 billion for the Wall, and cutting domestic programs. This budget can’t go anywhere without congressional approval, but it speaks volumes that he’s crazy enough to propose it at all. Action: Contact your MoC and tell them that Trump’s proposed budget is ridiculous. Separated Families, Part 2 Friday’s action supported H.R. 883, which would offer restitution for victims of Trump’s illegal family separation by granting a legal pathway to citizenship for those affected. The Senate has an identical bill underway, S. 271, Families Belong Together Act, introduced by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them to cosponsor S. 271, Families Belong Together Act. If Senator Blumenthal is yours, thank him. If your Senator is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, let them know that you want this bill to quickly be brought to the Senate for a full vote. |
