Oppose Michael Brennan Donald Trump has nominated attorney Michael Brennan to fill a long-vacant seat on the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. Brennan has denied racial bias in the U.S. justice system, and a senator from his home state of Wisconsin, Tammy Baldwin (D) has refused to return a “blue slip” for his nomination. In the past, a refusal from a home-state senator to return a blue slip meant an automatic disqualification for a nominee, but Chuck Grassley (R-IA) of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who always honored this process during Obama’s term of office, is refusing to do so for the second time in Trump’s presidency. Action: 1. Contact your Senators and ask them to oppose the nomination of Michael Brennan to the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. 2. Contact Senator Chuck Grassley and ask him to continue to honor the blue slip system as he and his predecessors have always done in the past. Catch-Up Day Catch up with any Actions you missed this week! Gun Control End the Dickey Amendment The Dickey Amendment is the source of the infamous prohibition on the CDC’s ability to study or research the effects of gun violence on public health. The Amendment was added to a spending bill in 1996 and prohibits the CDC from using any of their injury prevention funding for research that "advocate[s] or promote[s] gun control.” Last year, Stephanie Murphy (D-CA) introduced HR 1478 to repeal the Dickey Amendment. Since the Parkland shooting, this bill is gaining bipartisan support. Action Contact your MoC and ask them to support HR 1478, the Gun Violence Research Act. Or thank them if they are already a co-sponsor. Donation Suggestion: MoveOn plans to erect billboards to show how much money members of Congress receive from the NRA. If you’d like to help fund this, you can donate here: https://act.moveon.org/donate/stop-the-nra-billboards?suggested_ask=3&utm_medium=email&source=email_reg&t=2&akid=200986%2E10220574%2EORAaKO A Day to be Thankful National School Walkout Yesterday, children all over the country took part in the National School Walkout to honor the lost students of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School and to protest the inaction of adults to protect children from gun violence. We all owe a debt of gratitude to these children, and we look forward to the day when they are running the country! Here’s an interview with two of yesterday’s leaders: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2018/mar/14/wednesday-walkout-gun-control-parkland-florida-students-live?page=with:block-5aa94c01e4b0d7d09c5c7515#block-5aa94c01e4b0d7d09c5c7515 Action: Try to find out how your local school district handled the walkout. Send a message of thanks to your district if it was supportive and a message of criticism if not. Conor Lamb Yes! Dodd-Frank Rollback The Senate is to vote to loosen some of the restrictions in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act which were put into place to prevent the sort of risky financial behavior which lead to the ‘08 crisis. Action: Contact your Senators and ask them to preserve all the protections and restrictions contained in the original Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Conor Lamb The special election in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District is happening today.
