DACA Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program for young people who arrived in this country before their 16th birthday; it allows them to work towards legal status and be safe from deportation. In the present hostile climate, DACA recipients are at risk for deportation if their reapplication is pending. In the case of Daniela Vargas of Jackson, MS, she was detained for deportation during the period after she had re-applied for DACA status and had received pending approval. She has been released but remains at risk for deportation. Daniel Medina Ramirez of Seattle remains in custody. Here’s more info. Action: Let one or more of the following people know that you’re watching to make sure that DACA participants are treated fairly and that the DACA program continues:
Action: In whatever time you have left every day during the week, contact your Senators, Congressperson, and/or the President about whatever aspects of the budget are near and dear to your heart. Information about the budget can be found on our website here. Links to White House, Senate, and House contact info on Speak Out page of www.thetenminuteactivist.com Trump's Proposed Budget

Seniors: the Budget makes severe cuts in programs which help vulnerable seniors - e.g. NIH research, housing subsidies for seniors, jobs for low-income seniors, etc. More information at Forbes. 2. Education:
3. The Environment and Public Health:
4. Defense: the proposed Budget gives an additional $54 billion to defense spending. More at CNBC. 5. Tax Cuts: the Budget proposes to give $144 million over the next ten years in tax cuts to those who earn over $1 million a year. More at The New York Times. ACA - Day 6 This week we have taken various actions to oppose the GOP repeal-and-replace health care legislation:
Today’s action:
ACA - Day 5 AMA & AARP The American Medical Association opposes the GOP repeal-and-replace health care legislation - you can read about it here. The AARP has also spoken out against the new health care bill. You can read their letter to Congress here. Action: Email or write to the AARP and the AMA to thank them for their public opposition to the new health care bill. Joyce A. Rogers Senior Vice-President, Government Affairs AARP 601 E Street, NW Washington DC 20049 Email: member@aarp.org James L. Madara, M.D. Executive Vice-President, CEO American Medical Association AMA Plaza 330 N. Wabash Ave., Suite 39300 Chicago, IL 60611-5885 Online contact form: https://www.ama-assn.org/eform/submit/contact-us ACA - Day 4 Letter to Editor Write a letter to the Editor of your local paper talking about any aspect of the health care issue. If your family has been positively impacted by Obamacare, if you feel you will lose benefits or have to pay more under “Ryan Care,” if you believe in a single-payer system, if you like Christopher Ruddy’s proposals, if you have experienced health care in another country - put it in your letter. Be sure to look up the submission guidelines before submitting your letter. ACA - Day 3 Donald Trump has a friend who doesn’t talk crazy. Hard to believe, but this man - Christopher Ruddy - in fact talks pretty good sense, and he has Trump’s ear. He has written an opinion piece outlining a health care plan which seems to address some of the major flaws in Obamacare, while at the same time advocating universal coverage with a single-payer system. Action:
ACA Week - Day 2 The Congressional Budget Office report is in. The non-partisan report predicts that one year after passage of Paul Ryan’s repeal-and-replace legislation, 14 million fewer people will have healthcare coverage. Ryan is crowing about how much the deficit will go down as a result. But all right-thinking people can surely agree that removing health care from Americans is not a good way to save money. Here’s the Washington Post from Monday with an article about the proposed plan. It’ll give you some talking points to contact your representatives. Please - once again - call or write to your House representative and your Senators to say that you have read about the CBO report and you are alarmed, horrified, shocked, disgusted - well, you know what to say - about the proposal. Democrats as well as Republicans should hear us telling them loud and clear that we want them to do everything they can to block passage of the bill. There are a number of Republicans who aren’t happy with it either, so the more voices which are heard, the better. ACA Week This is going to be a week of ACA actions. The ACA is by no means perfect, but it has made healthcare coverage available to over 20 million people who didn’t have it before. Without it, millions of people will suffer. Today’s action - If you don’t know already, find out contact information for your state representative, state senator, and governor. Send them a message by postcard, phone, or email saying that you are counting on them to ensure that all residents of your state enjoy the benefits of easily available, affordable health coverage. |
