Trump’s State of “Emergency” Trump still thinks he “probably almost definitely” will declare a state of emergency in order to get funding for his wall. Action: Keep blasting Trump with anti-wall, anti-”emergency” messages: http://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump http://twitter.com/POTUS. www.whitehouse.gov/contact/#page (202) 456-1111 His Facebook page Trump’s Address For those of us masochistic enough to watch Trump’s Oval Office address the experience was unedifying. The man continues to be unhinged, out of touch, and incapable of resolving anything. Action: 1. Send 1,000 Tweets to Trump, saying that you found his OO address to be banal and ignorant and telling him to back off his wall fantasy. http://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump http://twitter.com/POTUS 2. Contact the White House to say the same thing. www.whitehouse.gov/contact/#page (202) 456-1111 Gun Control The new Congress is making gun control a priority. HR 8 calls for universal background checks, closing the loophole which allows private and gun-show sales to bypass the National Instant Criminal Check System. The bill was introduced by a Democrat (Thompson, CA) and a Republican (King, NY), and four other Republicans have also co-sponsored the bill - Smith (NJ), Upton (MI), Mast (FL), and Fitzpatrick (PA). Action: Contact your Member of Congress and say how thankful you are to see meaningful gun safety legislation coming down the pipeline and that you expect them to vote in favor of HR 8. If you are a constituent of one of the Republicans who co-sponsored the measure, send them a special message of thanks. Yemen The 115th Congress did not vote in favor of a resolution ending U.S. military support for the Saudi war in Yemen, a measure which the Senate had already backed. Now that the 116th Congress is in session, it’s time to re-open the issue. Action: Contact your Member of Congress and ask them to prioritize withdrawing U.S. military aid for the Saudis in Yemen. Funding the Government The House, on January 3, passed H.R. 21, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019, which would fund the government through September. On the same day, the House passed H.J. Res. 1, “making further continuing appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security for fiscal year 2019, and for other purposes,” would would fund DHS until February 8 without providing funding for a wall. The Senate has still to vote on these measures. Action: Contact your Senators to say you applaud passage of H.R. 21 and H.J. Res. 1, and ask them to make it a priority to support and pass this legislation in the Senate also. End Government Shutdown The new speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has proposed a plan which would fund most of the government until the end of the fisal year and the DHS through February 8 to allow time for more debate on border security. Trump has said he opposes the plan. Action: Contact your Member of Congress to say you support Pelosi’s plan to reopen the government and to ask your MoC to refuse to be pressured by Trump into making concessions over the Wall funding. |
